Which types of wood and applications is OLI NATURA® hardwax oil suitable for?
OLI NATURA® hardwax oil is the right choice if you are looking for a hardwax oil that can be used for nearly all indoor wood projects - instead of having a different wood oil in the cupboard for every application.
Whether furniture, dining tables, kitchen countertops, stairs, doors, wall paneling, or windowsills - the oil-wax combination is suitable for nearly all types of wood and wood-based materials, including maple, beech, oak, ash, spruce, and pine, as well as cork, bamboo, OSB, plywood, and multiplex.
The hardwax oil is particularly suitable when light-colored woods are to be tinted subtly and you want an easy-to-apply, open-pore, and easy-to-repair surface.
Would you like a transparent colored look? Then choose OLI NATURA® COLOUR hardwax oil - also available in Cotton White for the popular Scandinavian look. Do you prefer the more pronounced enhancement of the wood grain provided by a classic impregnating oil? Then OLI NATURA® Project Oil is the right choice.
How does OLI NATURA® hardwax oil change the appearance and feel of the wood?
The natural appearance of the wood is preserved. The grain and texture are gently accentuated, while the surface remains open-pore and tactile. The subtle enhancement of the wood grain showcases particularly light-colored wood species harmoniously. The result is a satin-matt finish. For an even mattier appearance, the surface can be polished with a white oil pad during the wet phase.
Tip: Test the hardwax oil beforehand on wood prepared in the same way and assess the color after drying.
How easy is OLI NATURA® hardwax oil to apply?
The oil-wax combination can be applied easily and evenly. One coat is usually sufficient for furniture. For stairs and heavily used countertops, a second coat is recommended - without intermediate sanding.
The surface is durable, dirt- and water-repellent, and easy to maintain. Scratches and signs of wear can be repaired locally or simply refreshed at any time - without sanding. The oil does not crack, peel, or flake.
What can you rely on with OLI NATURA® hardwax oil?
Once fully cured, the surface is safe for people, animals, and plants. Tested for everyday use: ECARF-certified (allergy-friendly), tested for food contact (LFGB), suitable for children's toys, and approved by building authorities.

How many coats of OLI NATURA® hardwax oil are required?
For normally used furniture, one coat is generally sufficient. For stairs, kitchen countertops, and other more heavily used wooden surfaces, a second thin coat is recommended.
Does OLI NATURA® hardwax oil require intermediate sanding?
No. Intermediate sanding is not required. The second coat can be applied directly to the dry surface after approximately 6–8 hours.
Why does OLI NATURA® hardwax oil sometimes remain sticky?
Usually, too much material was applied or excess oil was not completely removed after the penetration time. Therefore, apply OLI NATURA® hardwax oil thinly and polish thoroughly after 15–20 minutes. Excess material can significantly delay drying.
Why does OLI NATURA® hardwax oil not dry properly?
OLI NATURA® hardwax oil dries oxidatively and requires oxygen from the air to do so. Applying too much material, low temperatures, high humidity, insufficient air circulation, or covering the surface too soon can significantly delay drying and curing.
Remove excess oil completely, ensure good air circulation during drying, and do not cover freshly oiled surfaces airtight until they have fully cured not cover freshly oiled surfaces airtight.
Why does the oiled surface appear blotchy or have uneven gloss?
The causes are often uneven sanding, differing absorbency, or unevenly remaining material. Therefore, prepare the surface evenly, apply the hardwax oil thinly, and polish off all excess oil completely.
What final sanding is suitable for OLI NATURA® hardwax oil?
Grit 120–180 is ideal for good oil absorption; for finer furniture surfaces, a final sanding up to grit 240 is also possible. The finer the sanding, the lower the wood’s absorbency may be. What matters is an even sanding pattern.
Does OLI NATURA® hardwax oil change the color of the wood?
Yes, even a colorless hardwax oil enhances the grain and natural wood tone. OLI NATURA® hardwax oil enhances the wood tone comparatively subtly and is therefore particularly suitable for light-colored woods.
Can the gloss level of OLI NATURA® hardwax oil be adjusted?
Yes. For a more matte finish, the still-wet second coat can be polished with a white pad. This gives the surface a more understated, matte appearance.
Is OLI NATURA® hardwax oil water-repellent?
Yes, after fully curing, the treated surface is water-repellent. However, freshly oiled surfaces should be protected from water for approximately 5–7 days. Wipe up liquids as soon as possible and avoid standing water.
Can scratches and signs of wear be repaired?
Yes, minor damage can generally be repaired locally. Lightly sand the affected area and re-oil it with OLI NATURA® hardwax oil. Completely sanding the entire surface is usually not necessary.
When does a surface treated with OLI NATURA® hardwax oil need to be re-oiled?
Re-oiling is done as needed, not according to a fixed schedule. If the water repellency decreases or the wood looks dry and dull, the surface should be refreshed. The maintenance requirements depend on the type of wood and the level of wear.
