CARING FOR AND RE-OILING WOODEN GARDEN FURNITURE
Over time, sun, rain, and use leave their mark on wooden garden furniture. The color and grain fade, and the surface may feel dry and rough.
OLI NATURA® Care Set No. 5 contains everything you need to refresh and re-oil oiled garden furniture - compactly assembled and perfectly coordinated.
What is included in the OLI NATURA® Care Set No. 5?
250 ml OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil in Teak - for refreshing the warm wood tone and regular care.
- 2-in-1 sanding sponge - for smoothing rough areas and raised wood fibers.
- Brush - for applying a thin, even coat of oil.
- Polishing pad - for working in and polishing the oil.
- Oil-absorbing cloth - for safely removing excess oil.
Which garden furniture is the care set suitable for?
For garden tables, garden chairs, wooden benches, garden loungers, and other outdoor furniture made of hardwood, exotic wood, and suitable outdoor woods such as teak, Bangkirai, eucalyptus, or black locust.
Ideal when previously oiled wood needs refreshing - usually without completely sanding it down.
How easy is it to use?
Clean the wood and allow it to dry completely. If needed, smooth rough areas with the sanding sponge. Apply the oil thinly, allow it to soak in for about 15 minutes, and remove all excess. Then polish with the polishing pad.
Everything you need for easy maintenance - from smoothing to the finished oil application.
PREPARATION
Clean the garden furniture thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. If necessary, remove heavier dirt with OLI NATURA® Exterior Cleaner . Smooth rough or raised wood fibres with the sanding sponge in the direction of the grain and remove sanding dust.
Tip: Test the Teak colour in advance on an inconspicuous area. The type of wood, its natural colour, sanding and absorbency affect the result.
OIL GARDEN FURNITURE CORRECTLY
Work in dry weather at 15–25 °C. Do not apply oil in damp weather, direct sunlight or high heat.
- Stir or shake the oil well.
- Apply thinly and evenly in the direction of the grain.
- Allow to penetrate for about 15 minutes.
- Remove all excess oil and polish dry. No perceptible oil film may remain – too much oil can prolong drying and cause stickiness.
- Polish with the white polishing paduntil the surface appears even and dry to the touch.
Very dry or highly absorbent wood can be oiled a second time with a thin coat after drying overnight. For refreshing, one coat is usually sufficient.
COVERAGE
For initial treatment, 250 ml covers approximately 3–6 m² per coat, depending on the type of wood and its absorbency.
For maintenance , one thin coat is usually sufficient. Well-maintained wood absorbs less oil, while dry or heavily weathered wood absorbs correspondingly more.
DRYING
After approximately 1–2 hours, dust-dry, fully cured after approximately 5–8 days. During this time, protect from rain and moisture, do not clean with water and handle gently.
TOOL CLEANING
Clean brushes and tools immediately after use with OLI NATURA® brush cleaner or a suitable oil thinner.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Oil-soaked cloths, pads and sponges may self-ignitedue to heat buildup. After use, store under water or moisten and leave spread out outdoors to dry completely. The oil itself is not self-igniting.
Labelling
OLI NATURA® Yacht & Teak Oil is not subject to labelling requirements and is not classified as hazardous under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP). It is neither subject to mandatory labelling nor classified as dangerous goods.
Safety instructions
⚠ Cloths, rags and polishing pads soaked with oil can self-ignite due to heat accumulation. Clean them immediately after use, immerse them completely in water, or store them in an airtight metal container.
P102: Keep out of reach of children.
What is the difference between an initial treatment and a maintenance treatment?
With the initial or first treatment raw, untreated, or completely sanded wood is oiled for the first time. Consumption is generally somewhat higher for an initial treatment.
With the maintenance or subsequent treatment wood that has already been impregnated with oil is oiled again. This replenishes the wood pores to renew the protective effect and freshen up the wood’s appearance. For this treatment, the oil should be used more sparingly to avoid oversaturating the wood.
Can I apply the oil to an unknown old coating?
No. If the wood was previously waxed or coated with a layer of varnish, this layer must be completely removed so that the wood oil can penetrate. The impregnating oil requires an open pore system.
Can I use the teak pigmentation for other types of exterior wood?
Yes, the pigmentation is subtle and does not color other types of wood to a “teak tone.” However, the slight pigment content offers the advantage of improved UV protection.
How often should I re-oil?
Oiled wood also turns gray over time. If you want to prevent graying for aesthetic reasons, you should re-oil the surface once or twice a year, depending on its exposure to wind, sun, and rain.
Can the oil coverage vary?
Yes, coverage can be lower or higher and depends largely on the type of wood and the absorbency of the substrate. Rough and weathered surfaces require more oil than smooth or less heavily weathered surfaces. Consumption is approximately 40–80 g/m² per application.
How can I prevent stickiness after oiling?
After a short penetration time, any excess oil that has not been absorbed by the wood should be completely removed with an oil-absorbing cloth or a discarded cotton cloth.
Can I re-oil without sanding?
Yes. If the wood is untreated or has previously only been oiled, you can generally apply the oil directly without sanding.
How do I clean brushes?
Clean brushes immediately after use with a suitable oil thinner or brush cleaner.
Are oil-soaked cloths prone to spontaneous combustion?
Yes. The oil is a “drying oil” and reacts with oxygen in the air. This generates heat, which can build up in bunched-up rags and cause spontaneous combustion. Therefore, moisten oil-soaked cloths after use and allow them to dry spread out outdoors.
