Slip-resistant wood surfaces: why they are so important
As soon as safety is involved, legislators take a close look.
The German Workplace Ordinance (ArbStättV) and the Technical Rule ASR A1.5 “Floors” clearly stipulate: Wherever there is a risk of slipping, the floor must achieve a specific slip-resistance class (R class) .
And how is this tested? With the inclined-plane test: A wood sample is coated with oil, placed on an inclined plane and slowly tilted. A tester wearing standardized shoes walks across it - until they slip. The angle at which the first slip occurs determines the class. It sounds like balance training in a laboratory - but it is a strictly standardized procedure according to EN 16165.
Whether wood floors or stairs - tested safety is essential everywhere. Indoors, the following applies:
- R9: dry areas such as offices - the minimum level of safety is sufficient here.
- R10: schools, kindergartens or retail areas - anywhere many people are walking.
- R11: more heavily used or damp areas such as entrance areas, canteens or restrooms.
