Print materials and monitors cannot display natural, "true" colors. The color reproduction always looks slightly different. But the wood itself also influences the color effect of a pigment oil. This is sometimes overlooked. Here are some tips and pointers on what to look out for.
MONITORS AND PRINT MATERIALS ARE NOT COLOR-ACCURATE

THE WOOD DETERMINES THE COLOR

Of course, it depends on the wood itself. The resulting color of an oiled parquet floor or piece of furniture depends largely on the wood's base tone, as well as its type and condition. Due to its transparency, a color oil looks completely different on oak than on light pine or spruce. The grain and structure also remain visible and are even emphasized. This also applies to colorless oils in »Natural«, which are not pigmented. Depending on the type of oil, they deepen the wood's natural color. Professionals also refer to this effect as "color enhancement" or the "permanently wet effect."
CREATE A TEST AREA WITH COLOR OILS

One of our most important tips is always this: Before making a permanent change to a wood surface, a test piece should be prepared using similarly sanded original wood. This makes it easier to assess the effect of the selected pigment oil on wood. Our 20 ml sample bottles are ideal for this purpose and can be ordered from the online shop.
SUMMARY OF TIPS:
- The colors shown are intended only as a guide to give an impression of the color.
- For an accurate impression of the color, it is best to prepare a test piece using similarly sanded wood.
- The color of an oiled object depends on the type of wood, the condition of the wood, the wood's base tone, the user's individual working method, and the sanding of the wood.
- The »OLI-NATURA Oils & Waxes« in the »Natural« finish are not pigmented. Nevertheless, they emphasize the grain and color of the wood. The degree of color enhancement depends on the type of oil and the type of wood used.
- The colored »OLI-NATURA Oils & Waxes« add transparent color to the wood. Their pigments preserve the wood's structural appearance and give the surface a natural color. At the same time, the UV-stable color pigments help counteract the wood's natural color change for as long as possible.
- The »OLI-NATURA Oils & Waxes« in the »White« finish contain white pigments that counteract color enhancement. Depending on the level of pigmentation, the wood appears lighter and shows white and limed effects. The pores are colored white and stand out on the surface.
- The standard colors in a product range can be mixed with one another without any problems, providing a wide variety of colors.
- Once you have decided on a color, it is difficult to remove it completely, even with the most careful sanding. This is less of a problem with light-colored woods; with dark colors, you will always need to apply a color again.
-
Surface preparation should always be carried out carefully to achieve an optimal result. For the final sanding, we recommend a maximum grit of 180 for furniture and 150 for parquet floors.
COLOR OILS FOR FURNITURE, STAIRS, AND PARQUET

Pigmented hardwax oil in 7 colors that is easy to apply and also recommended for inexperienced users. All colors can be mixed with one another, allowing you to create your own shades. A second coat of oil enhances the color and protective effect. The lightfast earth pigments counteract the wood's natural color change caused by UV radiation. In addition, the “Cotton” and “Light” colors prevent yellowing on light woods such as pine, spruce, birch, and poplar. Whether for (modular) furniture, beds, kitchen and cabinet fronts, ceilings, wall paneling, or stairs, the colored hardwax oils are ideal for wood and wood-based materials in the home and camper.
