New oak trimmed to look old
Oak is so popular that many processors also like to give it an aged look with OLI-NATURA ANTIQUE
Oak, oak, oak: Whether as plank flooring, wall cladding, a wooden staircase, or a table. Oak is so popular that many processors like to give it an aged look. »OLI-NATURA Antique« is an environmentally friendly alternative to the conventional smoking and liming of oak. The water-based aging stain is easy to apply, odorless, ecological, and harmless to health. Its effect is based on a reaction with the tannic acid components of oak. As a result, »OLI-NATURA Antique« gives the wood an aged appearance. The product is suitable for both industrial and artisanal processing.
WHAT IS A REACTIVE STAIN?
Reactive stains generally work by reacting with the tannins in the wood to create a greying and aging effect. Oak in particular has a high tannic acid content, but walnut and ash also contain tannins. Since every type of wood contains different amounts of tannins, natural color variations occur. This gives the wood its distinctive character and is a desirable effect.
Our VOC-free, water-based reactive stain »OLI-NATURA Antique« is based on this effect. It is available in three different color intensities: »limed«, »smoked«, and »black smoked«. Depending on the color, amount applied, and acid content of the oak, the tannin-containing wood changes to a lesser or greater degree.
To age the oak, the aging stain is applied once or twice. It penetrates deep into the pores of the wood and reacts immediately with the oak’s natural tannin content. The reaction is visible as greying, which begins immediately after the stain is applied. Even when the water evaporates, the wood remains gray. However, the wood’s natural structure and properties are retained. The final color is achieved later through surface treatment with a colorless or colored treatment using OLI-NATURA Oils & Waxes.
EASY APPLICATION
»OLI-NATURA Antique« is easy to apply. Shake the container thoroughly before application. Then apply the stain to the finely sanded wood in the direction of the grain. Excess product can simply be wiped off with a sponge or cloth. When sanding, the following applies: The finer the sanding, the more even the surface; the coarser the sanding, the more rustic the effect. In flooring applications, it is customary to apply the product with a roller. On furniture surfaces, the stain can be applied with a sponge, brush, or spray device .
In general, the water-based aging stain is applied generously and evenly. This allows it to penetrate deep into the pores of the wood, resulting in a significantly stronger tannic acid reaction. This pre-treatment technique also increases the absorbency of the wood surface, optimizing the penetration depth of the subsequent oil application.
After complete drying, the wood fibers raised by the water content of the stain are cut down with sharp sandpaper. After removing the dust, the surface can be treated with OLI-NATURA Oils & Waxes.
OILING AFTER STAINING
Staining itself does not protect the surface. Therefore, an oil is later applied to the stained surface for protection. Users can choose between the colorless and colored OLI-NATURA Oils & Waxes. Thanks to the numerous combination options, many different surface effects can be achieved. For example, the combination of »Antique-smoked« with »Worktop-Oil« gives the wood the appearance of old timber. To intensify "white wash" or "black wash" effects, we recommend subsequent treatment with the 2-component colored oils OLI-NATURA HS Professional Oil, OLI-NATURA HS hardwax oil, or OLI-NATURA Colour-Oil in white, gray, or black. A dramatic black is achieved on the wood with »Antique-black smoked« and »Colour-Oil Midnight-Black«.
STEP BY STEP:

1) Before staining, sand the surface and then remove all dust thoroughly.

2) Then apply the stain evenly and generously in the direction of the grain using a brush, sponge, or roller.
For industrial application, »OLI-NATURA Antique« can also be processed using a roller-coating system.

3) Allow the wood surface to dry for long enough after staining.

4) After complete drying, cut down the raised wood fibers caused by the water using a fine-grit sanding sponge or sandpaper (e.g., P220). Then remove all dust thoroughly.

5) The surface can now be treated with colorless or colored OLI-NATURA oils.
